The Birthday Officer
For the women of Ahorrando por el Futuro in El Porvenir, Guatemala, the social network and confidence the group has built are just as important as the financial benefits. When the women began meeting over a year ago, they were afraid to take on leadership roles. Instead of electing a few representatives, the group decided that each member should have a responsibility – and elected a discipline officer, raffle officer, social fund officer and a birthday officer in addition to the traditional leadership roles.
The group’s birthday officer, Lidia spoke confidently about her role in the group telling me, I never learned to read and write, but I have an excellent memory. I never forget a birthday.
In the proud tradition of Lidia and the women of El Porvenir, Guatemala, I’d like to wish Paul Rippey, the founder of Savings-Revolution, a very happy birthday!

Thanks Suzanne. I think you should be the Birthday Officer for Savings Revolution.
Unlike Lidia Diaz, I usually forget birthdays. But I shouldn't. Birthdays are another chance to strengthen community and express solidarity, and to remember that what we have in common is more important than what separates us. In that spirit I wish everyone a happy birthday!
